More excellence pursuance

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

Last week I came across a PBS documentary intriguingly titled “Ferrets: The Pursuit of Excellence”. It turned out that it was one of three Mark Lewis documentaries airing on PBS this month. Last night I caught most of the third film, “Hairworld: The Pursuit of Excellence”. Once again, here’s the preview:

Call me crazy, but I […]

iMazing

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

Two posts in one day? A disturbing trend to be sure, but I couldn’t resist linking to this Wired post highlighting iWalk’s new propulsive prosthetic foot. After last week’s i-Limb post, I can’t help notice a trend. Perhaps Steven Colbert’s iEye prediction isn’t far off.

Blogs: the bat-signal for nerds

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

Yesterday I wrote a post highlighting a soon to be released service for getting measurements from photos. A few hours later I was delighted to discover that one of the companies founders had left a comment, confirming what I’d written. I was then able to e-mail him and find out some additional information about their […]

Measurements from images

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

A few weeks ago I alluded to an amazing computer science class I took in which we tried to identify a car from some extremely poor surveillance video. In movies and TV shows enhancing video is a snap, but for some reason just typing “enhance” while watching the video didn’t work on our machines. Instead […]

Know thyself

Overheard walking past a house on Brown Street:
Loud College Girl: My theory is, everyone has an American Girl Doll that represents them.

It’s a nice theory, but who can choose just one?

Ferrets: The Pursuit of Excellence

Saturday, July 21st, 2007

Like most Americans, my personal endeavors are primarily motivated by the pursuit of excellence. Also like most americans, I do not own a ferret. Previously, I worried that ferret acquisition might inhibit the excellence I strive for, but apparently my concerns were unwarranted. Why else would PBS have just aired a documentary entitled “Ferrets: The […]

Eric’s restaurant of the week

Friday, July 20th, 2007

First off, just so we’re clear, I’m not making a commitment to blog about a restaurant every week. Do you hear me internets? I owe you NOTHING!

This week, I’m happy to give Jolie a big thumbs up. It’s a bit dainty by Providence standards, but that’s probably why it’s in Brooklyn (or “Big Providence” as […]

The $18,000 dollar man

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

There are some major advances taking place in bionics these days (in part due to the Iraq war). Most recently, there’s the i-Limb (I hope Apple doesn’t sue), featured in this cnet article slideshow. The i-Limb costs about $18,000 dollars and is much more human-like than other prosthetic hands. For one it has 5 fingers, […]

Electronic medical records for all!!!

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

I realize healthcare isn’t my area of expertise, but it’s a hot topic these days and as a a computer scientist I feel obliged to sing the praises of electronic medical records (EMRs).
Today Ezra Klein highlighted this recent study, which questions whether EMRs really improve patient care. The study looks at whether patients seeing private […]

Slow Train Coming

Monday, July 16th, 2007

Yesterday my train to NYC was an hour late after a lengthy delay outside Providence. According to our conductor the Acela Express in front of us had stopped, thinking they’d hit someone trespassing on the tracks. Upon inspection they discovered they had not (good for them!), but sadly the local police overheard the incident and […]
