I was tempted to write a post on this Times article, which explains that on average, men and women must have the exact same number of heterosexual partners, despite what survey’s often reveal. Sadly the author of the article doesn’t seem inclined to acknowledge the difference between averages and medians, nor does anyone interviewed in […]

After all my recent talk of Ferrets and Pinkberry, it’s high time for something more technical. Here is a puzzle my housemate told me about a month ago. Below the fold is my computer science style derivation of the answer.
A young man is committed to marry one of three identical sisters. Despite their genetic similarity, […]

Oh look, Gothamist is finally reporting on Pinkberry’s rapidly expanding Manhattan presence, even though I sent them a link to my post on the subject (along with a full size photo) like 63 hours ago. What’s more, they don’t even have the address right. The new location is most definitely on 6th avenue between 13th […]

After last month’s ferret post, I’m happy to highlight this article proclaiming the black-footed ferrets triumphant return to the wild. As of 1997 there were only 18 such animals left in their native Wyoming habitat. Fortunately these 18 ferrets were promptly whisked away to zoos, universities, and other ferret lovemaking facilities, and thanks to the […]

Steven Levitt has posted a follow-up to yesterday’s controversial terror brainstorming session. Apparently yesterday’s post generated more hate mail than anything he’s produced since his famously controversial paper linking abortions to crime reduction. I dare say Levitt does a much better job responding to his critics than I did.
Many of the e-mails he received seem […]

First, freakonomics.com has moved to the New York Times, good for them. Second, as of next month we can all bring lighters on planes again. Good for us. Third, economist Steven Levitt (coauthor of the book Freakonomics) just wrote a post about how best to create a terrorist attack, good for him.
Like most blog posts, […]

As I mentioned last month, Pinkberry is excellent. So much so that when home in NYC, I’m willing to trek from 16th and 6th all the way to 19th and 8th several times a week in the name of frozen deliciousness. Fortune has smiled upon me though, as a new Pinkberry is opening on the […]

When it comes to olympic fandom, I dare say I’m in the top 1 percent. For two magical weeks every two years, I make it my personal mission to absorb as much olympic coverage as humanly possible. During this time I talk about the olympics constantly, I watch TV a minimum of 12 hours a […]

The Zonbu is a new low power, environmentally friendly, $99 dollar computer. It has no moving parts (so it’s totally silent) and limited storage (4 GB of flash). Most of its computing power comes from being connected to the internet, so Zonbu users actually pay the company for monthly storage (although the storage is actually […]

Any one who knows me knows I’ve spent most of my life doing two things, watching television and doing math. As such, I was already well aware that actress Danica McKellar (i.e. Winnie Cooper from The Wonder Years) was a published mathematician. Today I learned that she has also written a middle school math textbook […]
