Florida is like sooooo international

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

Fun fact: for the duration my stay, whenever I’ve typed in “google.com” into a web browser, I’ve been redirected to google Japan.
I’m pretty sure this is a fluke involving the house’s IP address, because it happens on the other computers in the house, and when I VPN back to Brown, the problem goes away.

Sunshine and Merriment

Merry Christmas to all! For the first time ever I’m spending Christmas in Florida with (GASP!) my girlfriend Jessica’s family. For the first time in years I was woken up at (GASP!) 7AM. Since this was my first time spending Christmas down south, I feared that the lack of snow, or even cold, might dilute […]

miles per gallon vs. liters per kilometer

Monday, December 24th, 2007

About a year after my French friend Luc arrived in the states, he told me that he had basically adjusted to nonmetric units, with one exception, miles per gallon. In Europe not only do they measure fuel in liters and distance in kilometers, but they also measure fuel efficiency in liters per kilometer (not kilometers […]

Banks a lot

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

My friend Matt is curious why so many banks seem to be securing prime commercial real estate. It doesn’t seem to be much of an issue here in Providence (my bank’s presence near Brown is limited to ATMs), but when I go home to NYC, there do seem to be a lot of banks constantly […]

What’s the deal with everything: Area Coding

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

My housemate Chris grew up in Maplewood, New Jersey, area code 201. I’m a child of 212 myself, but as Chris recently pointed out, his area code is completely superior, since it is in fact the first area code. 0 and 1, of course, are a big no-no when it comes to starting a phone […]
