Last night my housemate Chris accepted a friend request on facebook from a girl who had just joined (and perhaps added him as a friend erroneously). While trying to figure out who she was, we saw that a number of her friends had congratulated her on joing. I’m still not on facebook, but it’s nice to know that once I dive in, I’ll be welcomed with open arms.

Facebook aside, I can’t help but notice that none of my friends have congratulated me on starting this blog. It might be because I’ve only told four people about it, but I think the real problem is the lack of online tools to facilitate the congratulatory process. I realize that e-mail, IM, or blog comments could all get the job done, but for a truly heartfelt congratulations on an online achievement, isn’t an e-card the way to go. Tragically, these e-cards do not exist.

I’m not just talking about starting blogs or joining social networking sites either. Maybe your friend just registered a domain name, or a family member decided to change e-mail addresses. Surely signing on to google chat for the first time certainly warrants the support of loved ones. The intransigent e-card industry needs to modernize their product!

In truth, I’m not sure what e-cards are out there. The best ones I could find were at someecards.com. There’s this card which states, “I wish our online chat had gone on longer.” Also there’s this one that says, “Someday I may add you as a facebook friend.” Sadly those are both geared toward flirting.
