By chance, flawed

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

When you visit this blog, your computer sends a message to the computer that hosts this site. That computer, in turn, responds with the priceless content currently being displayed by your web browser. This simple exchange, in essence, is the purpose of the internet; it provides a way for computers talk.
With so very many computers […]

A return to blogging

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

The scores of people who read this blog no doubt noticed that I’ve now gone well over two whole weeks without a post. Truly a tragedy. Now that the semester is (almost) over, I won’t let it happen again (I’m going to shoot for a post every other day, so stay alert google).
As I mentioned […]

Some additional recognition

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

After this post and this post, it seems excessive to mention that passive-aggressive notes is up for a Webby Award in the “weird” category. Then again, maybe a little excess is what this blog needs. Plus, I’d hate to snub David Bowie).
Unfortunately, we’re up against such blogging heavy weights as icanhasceezburger, so despite our recent […]

Looking to write? Try the internet

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

Via Techcrunch, the UK’s Society of Authors is expressing concern that internet-based book piracy may prevent more and more authors from writing. Before I try to quell their concerns, I’d like to congratulate them on being a cut above the music industry. Instead of simply whining about the potential drops in CD book sales, they […]

SXSW Interactive: a look back

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

The best thing about SXSW Interactive is getting to hang out with other conference goers at well-funded parties throughout Austin. If you have the means, I highly recommend it.
Austin is home to an impressive number of spacious bars and music venues, and since it’s warm, many of these feature large outdoor spaces. Club de Ville, […]

Overheard in Providence goes Interactive

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

Today, after months of careful planning, I find myself at SXSW interactive in Austin. It’s a bit like spring break for web 2.0 demographic, plus its the same week as the SXSW film and music festivals, which arguably draws an even more fun-loving crowd. Since the opening remarks is providing me my first opportunity […]

Florida is like sooooo international

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

Fun fact: for the duration my stay, whenever I’ve typed in “google.com” into a web browser, I’ve been redirected to google Japan.
I’m pretty sure this is a fluke involving the house’s IP address, because it happens on the other computers in the house, and when I VPN back to Brown, the problem goes away.

Getting copyright right

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

Last night I ended up staying awake way too late because, as I was about to go to bed, I came across these two posts by Salon’s Farhad Manjoo over at his Machinist blog. Apparently J.K. Rowling is suing some fan over his attempt to publish a print version of the Harry Potter Lexicon, an […]

TV on the Internet

Sunday, November 11th, 2007

For a while I’ve been planning to write about how my house recently decided to save $80 a month and cancel cable. Growing up, I definitely watched a lot of television. When I went to college, I also watched a lot of television. During the first half of grad school, when I lived by myself, […]

Verizon (and Internet), Still Crappy

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Three weeks ago I went on a bit of a rant about why Verizon does worse things than offer subpar phones. Here’s one more item for the list. Last week Verizon denied Naral Pro-Choice America permission to use their network to send text message alerts to Verizon customers who signed up. Today, Verizon decided to […]
